Cunnilingus linked to Oral Cancer in Men

Oral cancer cases have increased among non smokers due to oral sex

Despite tobacco use having gone down over the decades, Oral cancer cases among educated white men have been rising significantly. Research reveals that 65% of oral cancer cases are linked to the human papilloma virus (HPV) which results from oral sex and as opposed to cigarette smoking. Statistics show that oral cancer is on the rise but the cause isn’t smoking like earlier thought but cunnilingus, oral sex performed by men on their women.

The human papilloma virus is to blame for the rising oral cancer cases

The same virus has been in the past linked to cervical cancer in women and is the main cause of oral cancer as well. National Cancer Institute records for 2007 show that more than two thirds of the oral tumors reported were as a result of the Human papilloma virus leaving less than a third linked to other causes. HPV – 16, the strain that causes cervical cancer in women, is now the leading cause of oral cancer in non smoking men hence the link to cunnilingus.

Men should be vaccinated against HPV

Going by the worrying statistics, doctors now think men too should receive Gardasil, a vaccine which has been used in women for years to help prevent HPV and consequently protect women against cervical cancer. Should men stop this risky behavior now that research links it to oral cancer? There is no straight answer to this.

What then does the future hold for men who love oral sex?

Oral sex performed on a woman with no HPV poses no risk whatsoever for developing oral cancer, but then, how can one tell? Getting vaccinated against HPV or avoiding oral sex seems the only logical way out of a rather tough situation.
